-         BILLICH ON ZAVOD –

“To me there’s no greater musical pro and genius in Australia than Allan Zavod. Furthermore his looks are so much like the archetypal possessed musician that despite his busy schedule I’ve managed to persuade him to model for some of my more passionate, and compassionate, charismatic character studies. Whether at the keys or armed with baton, Zavod is theatre, expression, drive, romanticism, music to the eyes to a portraitist….and a bloody good cycling companion too.”

“Olympic Rhapsody 2000 is appropriately dedicated to Charles Billich in as much as the music aligns so closely with Billich’s powerful sports images. Just as Charles so vividly expresses on canvas the driving force of Olympians striving to great heights, so the music emotes high action ever apparent in the rapid musical patterns. The music flows with those great moments in time ultimately giving way to more pensive moods as heard in the quieter melodies, reflecting the aftermath of such incredible exertion.”

-         ALLAN ZAVOD, A BIOGRAPHY –

On the advice and support of Duke Ellington the Australian Composer Allan Zavod attended and later taught at the Berklee School of Music, Boston.

Based in the USA for the next 20 years, Allan played, recorded and toured the world with many music greats from Glenn Miller and Woody Herman Orchestras to the legendary Frank Zappa. America’s Music Bible “DownBeat” named him as one of the top ten keyboard artists of the 80’s.

As a composer for Symphony Orchestra Zavod is at the forefront of the fusion of classical music with jazz, as exemplified in his remarkable “Concerto for Trumpet Jazz Trio and Orchestra” written for renowned soloist James Morrison to open the 1998 Adelaide Symphony Season. The work will enjoy a repeat performance by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House in 2001, with a European tour to follow.

A 2000 Australia Council commission will see Zavod continue his brilliant compositional style with a Trombone Concerto for James Morrison and the Australian Youth Orchestra. As a film composer there are over 30 USA and Australian film and television scores to his credit. In addition his concert performances for Royalty, Heads of State and various charities throughout the world keeps Allan stimulated as an artist.
